Who has to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
April 2026: qualifying income over £50,000
April 2027: over £30,000
April 2028: over £20,000
Qualifying income is your gross self-employment and property income before expenses. Letting agent fees taken before you are paid still count. If you own property jointly, you look at your own share.
Key MTD dates for the 2026 to 2027 tax year
- Quarterly update 1:7 August 2026
- Quarterly update 2:7 November 2026
- Quarterly update 3:7 February 2027
- Quarterly update 4:7 May 2027
- Final declaration and tax payment:31 January 2028
HMRC has said it will not give penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first year. Late tax returns and late payments are still penalised as normal, so it pays to get into the habit now.
